Something Cold DJ Justin Carver shares his favorite tracks

"Justin Carver started his DJ night Something Cold in June of 2009 out of equal parts "frustration with the lack of diversity and interesting Detroit nightlife, an ever-growing record collection, and desire to bring a group of like-minded friends and music lovers to together to celebrate the niche market of analog electronics, minimal-synth, coldwave and industrial music," he says.

The post-industrial backdrop of Detroit, Carver adds, is appropriate and inspirational for Something Cold. “The cold, bleak, fragile, yet vaguely hopeful sound of minimal electronic and traditional music is very much a reflection of the state of Detroit, and much of the Rust Belt nowadays,” he says. Carver and Daniel Stolarski co-DJ the event. Something Cold occurs the second Sunday of every month at Nancy Whiskey in Corktown. “

The project is equal parts punk misanthropy, maudlin balladeering, fine art, low humor, classical study, psychedelic spacecasing, mad science and pop genius. Formed as a trio in Tampa, Florida in 2008, the band has undergone ceaseless revision and reinvention. After putting out numerous records and tapes on independent punk labels and touring the underground, the band truly hit its stride with the release of their second LP Children of Desire in April 2012. In addition to a very warm reception from fans, the record received praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NME, Spin, and numerous other critics and journals.http://vimeo.com/47212861#at=0 The Ukiah Drag from Providence-via-Boston-via-Florida, masters of desert-fried psych punk garbage.https://soundcloud.com/theukiahdrag Haunted House started late in 2012 as a means to distract its members from a stagnant routine. The four Detroit-area friends had spent much of the previous ten years making music in one form or another (mostly together), but began to view their recent re-enrollment into their former colleges as an admittance of some sort of personal defeat rather than a responsible step. This is when Joe Walmsley, Mark Smak, Brian Connelly, and Jeff Supina began to create music under the name Haunted House. By operating without any expectations or reservations, the resulting songs have encompassed a greater span of musical influence than any of the members were previously used to. At the very least, the sounds of 1980’s alternative, post-punk, and dark wave can be heard in Haunted House’s dreary, dual-vocal guitar pop. The band’s self-titled EP was released on January 14th, 2014 and was featured on Pitchfork’s Guide to Upcoming Releases: Winter 2014. Stereogum said of the leading single Guts - “The guitars and keyboards here are lush and colorful, but they’re laid out over the brittle, dry punch of drum machines, bringing to mind the industrial history of their Detroit home. Likewise, while the tune offers plenty of pretty melodies, the dual vocals of Joe Walmsley and Jeff Supina carry a hurt and loneliness that lend the track a striking complexity.” Links: Stream the EP http://hauntedhousemusic.bandcamp.com/ Something Cold DJs playing post-punk records late into the night.https://soundcloud.com/something-cold/something-cold-winter-2014
